Detroit (visiting family)

Mimi standing beside some hollyhocks in Uncle Hank's garden

Uncle Hank lives on the same farm that was the childhood home of the Lamp children, including my father-in-law. Then, it was a hog farm in the boondocks, and probably didn't smell very nice. Today, it is a very nicely manicured 10+ acre homestead, with a nicely mowed lawn, and neighbors with mansions.

Uncle Bernard's emus

The only livestock on Uncle Hank's farm now are Uncle Bernard's emus. I never did find out what he is planning on doing with them. They didn't look very friendly.

Mimi holding the frog

Besides the emus, there were two animals we had fun with: a frog and a bunch of lightning bugs. We didn't catch any lightning bugs, but we did catch a frog. I had never seen a lightning bug that wasn't in a zoo, so I was certainly thrilled!

The frog, making good his escape

Kaitie held it once, for a second or two, then exclaimed: "It touched me!" It then either escaped, or was released, depending on whom you ask. Mimi caught the frog several times after it escaped. I was afraid she would end up killing it, so I was glad when it escaped under the stairs.

The Ivorys, posing on Uncle Bill's tractor

We also attended a fun family get-together at Uncle Bill and Aunt Mary's house. Uncle bill had a tractor for mowing his lawn, and it formed the center of attention for a while, as all the newcomers tried their hands at driving it around his yard.
