Day 11: Albuquerque, NM to Holbrook, AZ
Whiting Brothers Station
Although these stations are ubiquitous, this one was interesting because it appears to have burned
down or been otherwise forcibly destroyed. Plus, I really liked the sign and
the way it has aged.
Service Station in Thoreau, NM
This old service station in Thoreau is still operating as a car repair shop. I stopped
to try to make conversation with the people working there, but they were pretty taciturn.
All I could pry out of them was this, in response to a question about the station's age:
"It's real old." Well, the pumps look really nice, although they have been crudely painted
white.
Shaun, Hugging a Burro
We stopped at Chief Yellow Horse's curio shop, and we were greeted by these wonderful burros.
They were very friendly. Even if we didn't give them food (which we did). This one let me
hug it. I didn't know Chief Yellow Horse before he passed away, but I loved his store.
Recently, Susan and I saw a show in which a certain mosquito expert, one of the world's foremost,
would bare his arm and offer it to a particular kind of rare mosquito he was particularly fond
of, just to help ensure its survival.
This is how I felt about this store. Most of the stuff was junk, and all of it was
overpriced,
but it was so wonderful, I had to do my part to support it, so we bought some fake Indian
stuff and some Iron Pyrite for Mimi the Rockhound.
The "Indian Cliff Dwellings"
One of the workers at the store was quite irritated when I suggested these cliff dwellings were
fake. She insisted they were real cliff dwellings. I didn't argue with her.
Panoramic Shot of a Wigwam Motel Room
This is a panoramic (360°) view of the inside of a Wigwam Motel room. Just press the arrow
or drag with the mouse to view the entire room.
