Day 12: Holbrook, AZ to Flagstaff, AZ
Morning at the Wigwam Motel
Boy, the Arizona sun is bright! The second best part of staying the Wigwam Motel (the best of staying
in the Wigwam Motel is staying in the Wigwam Motel) are the trains. Every time one rumbles by, the
whole "teepee" shakes. I was sad that I fell asleep so quickly. I wish there was a train in my
real back yard. My dogs are probably glad there isn't, though...
The Famous "Here It Is" Sign
Yes, I know this is one of the most photographed Route 66 signs, but it isn't real unless I
get my own picture of it!
The Girls on the Jackrabbit
Although this isn't the original, it has the same appeal (or more) to a 6 year old and her 8 year
old sister.
Kaitie's Shoe (Red Circle), in the Meteor Crater
We went to the Meteor Crater. Although I had been there before, I consider it a "must-see" for the
area.
Kaitie was standing by the edge of the observation deck, when she suddenly wailed, "My shoe!" I turned
to look. It still hadn't hit the ground. When it did, it was far below. Just a black dot. The shot
above was taken with a telephoto lens.
I started to laugh gently. Kaitie noticed, and burst into tears. She turned to Tomi, who
was also chuckling a little. Finally, she turned to Susan, who was hiding her laughter enough
to escape detection. We had to carry her to the car. By the end of the day, she was at least
able to see why we thought it was funny, but as far as she was concerned, it was still an epic tragedy.
Later, at the Grand Canyon, I made the mistake of saying, "Don't drop the binoculars." She just hissed,
"Dad, don't!"
Twin Arrows
I was looking forward to this stop for a long time, and I was devastated to find it closed.
Susan at the Grand Canyon
We spent the whole afternoon at the Grand Canyon. It was amazing. I have been there before, but
it is so great that I couldn't drive by it without stopping. It was hot, but we had a great time.
