Day 14: Kingman, AZ to Rancho Cucamonga, CA
Susan Surrounded by the Oatman Burros
We weren't sure how friendly or docile these burros were going to be. They surrounded Susan
shortly after we found them on the road outside of town. We also met a few people in Oatman who
were extraordinarily friendly. Oatman is definitely a must-see on Route 66.
Burro Eyeing the Carrots
The burros seemed very smart, but they don't jump, apparently. This one was ogling the bag
of carrots, but didn't try to steal them. The burros seemed pretty healthy, and were quite
friendly. There were no illusions about who was boss, though.
Roy's Cafe, and an Old Police Car
I laughed at the locals' humor at this one. There is a crude dummy inside the police car.
Ludlow Cafe
There are lots of ruins along 66, but this one is the most interesting to me. I love
the style of the letters. My attraction to this building is hard to explain. I have
been wondering if I saw it in a movie or something, which planted some subconscious
memory in my brain.
El Rancho Motel
I have added this to the short list of Route 66 motels I want to stay in someday. The others
are the El Vado in Albuquerque, the Blue Swallow in Tucumcari and the Wigwam in Holbrook. The
Wigwam was the only one we stayed in on this trip.
License Plate Impression
I noticed this intriguing license plate impression embedded in the wall of a burned out
tourist cabin off 66 in California. It appears to read: "19 CALIFORNIA 47 8D 31 04"
Panoramic Shot from the Oatman Highway
This is a panoramic shot of a view off the Oatman Highway. Just press the arrow
or drag with the mouse to view the entire image.
This was one of the most beautiful places I've seen on this trip, and the curving road was awesome.
It would have been pretty hellish in a cantankerous old Model T, though, I suspect.
