Day 8: Tulsa, OK to Amarillo, TX
Jack's BBQ, in Tulsa, OK
The BBQ was awesome at this Route 66 mainstay. For $5.50, I got this huge mound of pork that was just
delicious, and I normally loathe pork. Tomi asked what a hot link was, and the guy working there
thought that was the funniest thing he ever heard. Tomi got mad at him for making fun of her.
Abandoned section of Route 66.
Outside Tulsa there are lots of sections of old 66 abandoned like this, growing grass.
Foss, OK.
Apparently, this is all that remains of the old town. It is now
designated an Official Oklahoma Ghost Town. Oddly, despite the
designation, there are a few houses nearby.
The Beetle that scared us
After photographing the Foss gas station, I climbed back into the van. A moment later, I
uttered a muffled scream, as I felt something crawling on me and saw a wiggling black shape.
I brushed it off, and Susan kept driving. A few seconds later, Kaitie started making funny
noises. I turned around to look at her, and saw a look of contorted terror on her face.
For a few seconds, she tried to contain her panic, then, suddenly, she squeezed out of the
seat belt and lunged forward into Mimi's lap, where she started screaming. Then Mimi started
screaming. The adults were all laughing like maniacs.
Elephants by the truck stop
I guess circus elephants need to stop and stretch their legs too, just like us. As we pulled
out of an I-40 truck stop, we saw these elephants foraging in the bushes across the street.
We drove over to look at them, and nobody hollered at us, so we continued watching and
taking pictures for a few minutes. They were kind of cute.
